Microsoft revives Three Mile Island, and Oracle builds SMRs—tech giants turn to nuclear for AI energy needs.
Sectors & Industries
Microsoft is reviving the Three Mile Island nuclear plant, while Oracle is building three small reactors to fuel its AI data centers. These strategic moves by two tech giants highlight a growing trend: using nuclear power to meet the rising energy demands of AI and cloud computing.
Microsoft’s deal with Constellation Energy will restart Three Mile Island’s reactor, which has been offline since 2019. The plant will now supply electricity exclusively to Microsoft’s data centers, providing power equivalent to 800,000 homes. This approach offers a stable, carbon-free energy source essential for large-scale AI operations.
Meanwhile, Oracle is taking a different route by developing small modular reactors (SMRs) to power its future data centers. These compact reactors, expected to produce over 1 gigawatt of electricity, promise faster deployment and higher efficiency compared to traditional nuclear facilities.
Both companies are securing long-term, reliable energy solutions to support their growing AI infrastructures.
Stay tuned for more updates on how these tech giants are reshaping energy and AI!
