Tesla Semi earns DHL's approval with 500-mile range and potential $18,000 annual fuel savings for long-haul trucking.
Sectors & Industries
DHL confirmed that the Tesla Semi can achieve 500 miles on a single charge with a full load, validating Tesla’s initial predictions. In a recent two-week trial, the logistics giant integrated the electric truck into its U.S. operations, covering 3,000 miles, including a fully loaded 390-mile long haul. The truck successfully hauled 75,000 pounds, demonstrating its capability for long-distance, heavy-duty transportation.
DHL also reported an impressive efficiency of 1.72 kWh per mile, exceeding both expectations and Tesla’s own rating. This efficiency offers significant cost advantages. For instance, charging a Tesla Semi for 500 miles costs around $100, compared to $300 for diesel to cover the same distance. This could lead to substantial savings for fleet operators.
With the average truck driving 45,000 miles per year, Tesla Semi owners could save approximately $18,000 annually in fuel costs, or $180,000 over a typical 10-year lifespan.
DHL has expressed enthusiasm for the Tesla Semi and is actively planning to integrate it into its U.S. fleet. The company, which operates thousands of diesel trucks, stands to save significantly in fuel costs, potentially $36 million annually if it were to replace 2,000 of its diesel trucks with Tesla Semis.
DHL also aims to expand its use of electric vehicles, with plans for 30% of its North American fleet to be near-zero or zero-emission vehicles by 2030. As Tesla ramps up production with its new factory in Nevada, DHL’s operations in Europe could also benefit from this expansion.
Tesla’s Semi truck represents a significant shift in the logistics industry, providing reduced operating costs, improved efficiency, and increased sustainability. The Semi offers a compelling value proposition, especially when considering the massive $555 billion market opportunity in the 3.7 million semi-trucks currently operating in the U.S.
The logistics giant first ordered 10 Tesla Semi trucks back in 2017, following the initial prototype unveiling. Despite production delays, DHL remained committed to the order and is now seeing the benefits of Tesla’s electric truck technology.
Tesla's expansion into electric trucking is not without competition. While Tesla is making strides, DHL has also been testing electric semis from other manufacturers like Volvo. However, Tesla’s growing presence in the market, coupled with its competitive pricing and cost-saving potential, positions it as a major player in the future of logistics.
